Our Place

This near 100-year-old log cabin was built by a skilled local craftsman and has been treasured by one family for 5 generations and counting. The cabin sits on a cliff 40 feet above Lake Superior. You’ll find on entry a fully equipped kitchen, an updated small bathroom, and two bedrooms (one with a queen, one with a full bed and 2 bunks). Our living room boasts 2 deer head and a moose, with large picture windows overlooking the daily changing lake views. The woodstove is a new addition and is nestled into the original Carlton Peak quarried hearth. In the warm months our long side porch has an extra twin bed and 2 open doors which allow the screened lake breeze and the gurgle of our stream just below. We have a cedar bridge over the stream which leads to a spit of land for an extra private overlook or small tent site. There is a firepit in the cabin’s main yard, a propane grill and parking for at least 3 cars.

Our Particulars

Our family caretakes this unique spot on the Northshore and we make time to be here, traveling through the years from as far away as CA, NY, NJ, FL, TN, IL, IN, KY and MN. We rent for the summer-fall seasons only when family is not scheduled; and we look for renters who will appreciate the vintage character of our place. There is a small selection of books and games, original artwork, old maps, and hand crafted ironwork along with sloping floors and the Northwoods flies and mice we try to keep at bay.If you are looking for a charming private place overlooking one of the Great Lakes, this is one to surely consider. We have excellent wifi, but who wants to stay inside for long! We are right off the Gitchi-Gami bike path and near the Superior National Golf Course, with excellent hiking and biking trails nearby, waterfalls, and of course the fishing lakes and Boundary Waters wilderness.

Our Procedure

To date, we only offer our place for rent privately, as we like to know new friends who will value our cabin home. We do not charge any extra cleaning fee over our rental rates except if there is a larger party (over 4) or pets coming. You will have the place to yourselves without our intrusion, but we do take a returnable deposit at each rental to protect against any damage noted after your visit. We insist that you respect our cliff and not venture down to the rocks due to some recent erosion which makes our lake path dangerous until that settles. Kayaks can be rented and put in nearby for lovely paddles on the big lake. Our private respite is a perfect place for a sabbatical with May or August-October the best months for long stays. To request time in our cabin (3-night minimum) you will need to fill out a brief survey, and we will send you prices and availability.

"Again and again we go back to Pine Knot for our North Shore
vacations. There is no other place we would rather stay. If you are looking for a charming, quiet, comfortable place to stay near Lutsen, this is the place. It is truly the perfect place to unwind.
On nice days we explore, or browse the shops & eat in Grand Marais. Treat yourself to the gondola ride at Lutsen Mountain. You won't regret it. Everything is a short drive from Pine Knot.
On rainy days, light a fire and read a book. There are so many books!
The WIFI works great should you feel the need to check in to the real world. We are guilty of doing just that. Mostly to post pics on FB of our charming find on the North Shore. You could always stream a television show or movie on your device, but who would want to? There is so much else to look at. Last week the lake was really rolling, so we were treated to the ore boats hugging the coast."

"This place is amazing!! This was my first experience visiting the area and I now I understand why everyone loves this place :). I love the privacy, warmth and charm of this beautiful log cabin. I really appreciate that the owners work to preserve the original structure which offers a unique opportunity to enjoy the original craftsmanship of this home. The cabin is nestled on the bluff so the views and access to the lake are incredible. I love the wooden bridge overlooking the stream, the beautiful fireplace and cozy atmosphere. Thank you so much for sharing your home with us :)!!" Ronnie McCloud"Thank you for opening the cabin for us. It was lovely as always 💜🍁" Heath Stanton
